Has been referred to as a date rape drug because of it’s high potency and ability to cause strong amnesia.

Why may this be prescribed?

This drug is no longer licensed in the UK, it was prohibited for prescription by the NHS in 1992. However 1mg is available under private prescription.

  • Used as a hypnotic, sedative and skeletal muscle relaxant drug.
  • Effects can last from 8 to 24 hours.

Side effects?

Effects persist throughout the next day after night-time administration such as sleepiness and impaired psychomotor and cognitive functions.

The use of flunitrazepam in combination with alcohol synergizes the adverse effects and can lead to toxicity and death.

Likely level of drug expected to be impaired?

300µg/L

Blood concentrations are usually in a range of 5-20 μg/L in persons receiving the drug therapeutically as a night-time hypnotic and 100-1000 μg/L in victims of acute fatal overdose.

How long will it take to leave my system?

Detection time starts – 3-8 hours after taking.

  • Urine – Up to 10 days.
  • Hair – Up to 90 days.
  • Saliva – Up to 3 days.
  • Blood – Up to 1 day.
